VAT registration in the UAE is a critical compliance step for growing businesses. The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has set clear thresholds and deadlines that business owners must adhere to in order to avoid administrative penalties.
VAT Registration Thresholds
The UAE VAT registration framework is divided into two thresholds:
- Mandatory Registration: You must register for VAT if your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or if you anticipate crossing this threshold in the next 30 days.
- Voluntary Registration: You may voluntarily register for VAT if your taxable supplies and imports, or taxable expenses, exceed AED 187,500. This is beneficial for startups looking to recover input VAT early on.
The Registration Process
The VAT registration process is conducted entirely online through the FTA’s EmaraTax portal. You will need to provide your Trade License, Emirates ID of the authorized signatory, passport copies, and proof of authorization. SBR Chartered Accountants can act as your registered Tax Agent to handle this entire process seamlessly.
Penalties for Late Registration
Failing to submit a VAT registration application within the timeframe specified by the FTA (usually 30 days of reaching the mandatory threshold) will result in a late registration penalty of AED 10,000.
